maeve

As she sat on the couch looking up at Steve with his hand outstretched to hers, she couldn’t help but regret not taking a shower when she’d gotten home earlier that day. Not that she smelled or anything–at least not that she was aware of–but because she could have better contemplated the whole Steve and Jackson situation.

The shower had always been Maeve’s best thinking spot. All of her finest decisions and ideas had come about when she had scalding hot water pouring over every inch of her body.

Getting a cat and naming her Hedy after the fabulously clever Hedy Lamarr? That was a shower idea.

Getting trashed on the plane to the Mediterranean after Jackson texted he wasn’t going? Not a shower idea–it ended horribly, and she was still in the midst of a five-year ban with the airline carrier.

Opening up her own olive oil tasting shop and moving to New England without her bastard ex fiancé? Shower idea.

Posting videos to TikTok without scrutinizing them for Steve’s face in various objects in the video? Not a shower idea.

The morning after her dinner with Steve, she’d been in the shower–occasionally allowing herself to remember how their lips accidentally met–when she had the brilliant idea to keep it strictly professional with Steve. He was in an awful place after whatever heartbreak he’d had, and she was calling him from restaurant bathrooms, asking him to pretend to love and adore her. Disaster was written all over it.

Her confidence in her shower decision to resist Steve at all costs proved to be the right call as the day went on and everything imploded around them. Another example and reinforcement of the idea that shower decisions were solid, well-thought-out decisions that had merit. They were worthy of her attention and required strict adhesion long after the shower was over.

If only her body would get on board. She hadn’t technically done anything that crossed the lines of friendship with Steve, but they were getting close. Like earlier in the day when she’d stood behind Steve to get footage from his perspective, but really it had been an excuse for her to press her body to his under the pretense of work so she could experience it without putting herself out there or risking any negative consequences. Just two people cooking and documenting said cooking.

And now, with Steve in her apartment, she was letting things slip into dangerous territory. Again. They both were. Because regardless of his very recent and traumatic breakup with Annana, Steve wasn’t exactly keeping his distance from her. He’d enjoyed their flirting in the food truck and she was certain that when she’d turned around again just now in her apartment, she caught him taking a quick sniff of her sweatshirt. A sweatshirt that conveniently smelled like her because she’d spritzed it quickly in the back room when she went to get it.

Sitting on the couch with Steve awaiting her decision, she threw out her previous shower promise to just say “no” and she reached out to take his hand in hers.
